Under the GHG Protocol Land Sector and Removals Standard (LSRS), reporting intervention outcomes in the physical inventory requires companies to demonstrate physical traceability. While Chain of Custody (CoC) models can provide this traceability, implementing them at scale can be challenging in fragmented and highly aggregated agricultural commodity value chains.

This position paper outlines the Value Change Initiative (VCI)’s perspective on the role of physical traceability in land-sector greenhouse gas accounting and reporting. It makes the case for accepting credible alternative traceability approaches, either alongside or in place of CoC models, where they can demonstrate sufficient physical connectivity and maintain the integrity of Scope 3 inventories. This would support the scaling of value chain decarbonization efforts.
